301 Redirection and Doorway Pages

Posted on September 20, 2010

The fact that search engines favor domain names that contain one or more keywords in a search query fuels the mass purchasing of keyword-rich domains in the hopes of increasing site traffic through a couple of strategies;

  1. 301 redirection of keyword-rich domains
  2. content-rich doorway pages on those domains

The obvious question becomes how do these tactics effectively work.

301 redirection: Is redirecting a large number of domains suspicious? Not if it involves consolidating your brand.

Doorway pages are typically large sets of poor-quality pages where each page is optimized for a specific keyword or phrase and violate Google’s Webmaster Guidelines. These General Guidelines provide a great place to start your education into SEO, make sure you check out Google’sSEO Starter Guide.
